Malignant Mesothelioma Causes - Causes of Mesothelioma
Asbestos exposure is the only known cause of mesothelioma in the United States. Previous exposure to asbestos fibers has been deemed responsible for a number of asbestos diseases, others of which include asbestos lung cancer, asbestosis and the development of pleural plaques or fibrosis. It is now known that asbestos manufacturers were aware of the hazards associated with asbestos exposure long before they chose to adequately warn their employees. The first warnings that were made to workers exposed to asbestos were given in the mid-1960s, and are now viewed to have been terribly inadequate. Even today, workers are not always told they are working around asbestos, especially in third world countries, and are therefore at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease of some kind such as mesothelioma or asbestosis.
Asbestos Exposure - Malignant Mesothelioma Prevalence
Each year in the United States, approximately 2,500 people are diagnosed with a case of malignant mesothelioma; most of them can recall being exposed to asbestos at one time or another in their life. After being exposed to asbestos, malignant mesothelioma symptoms can take anywhere from 10- to 40-years to manifest, allowing the disease time to grow and spread (metastasis) undetected. It has been determined that the younger a person is when they are exposed to asbestos, the higher is the risk of developing a serious asbestos disease like malignant mesothelioma.
Other Mesothelioma Causes
Although malignant mesothelioma causes have thus far only been linked with asbestos exposure, medical researchers have not yet discounted the possibility that the disease could be caused by a number of factors. All the evidence that has been compiled relating to all known mesothelioma cases has pointed towards asbestos as the only causative factor. Any discussion of mesothelioma causes has therefore been limited to asbestos exposure.
