Mesothelioma Support

Malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive type of cancer that is believed responsible for more than 200,000 deaths worldwide.  Mesothelioma support networks play an integral role in the mental and emotional treatment of the deadly cancer. Coping with the post-diagnostic emotional burden can be more difficult than dealing with the disease itself.  It is therefore important that mesothelioma sufferers have an outlet for support through which their burden might be eased.  Family often serves as the primary source of mesothelioma support for victims of the disease; however, not everyone suffering from malignant mesothelioma has a family through which to receive support of some kind.  Mesothelioma support organizations provide an avenue through which such people can receive comfort and assistance dealing with the hardships  and emotional stress that are associated with treatment.

Mesothelioma Support Organizations

Support organizations for mesothelioma are typically nonprofit foundations such as the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America (www.MesoRFA.org).  An online portal created by MesoRFA provides information about malignant mesothelioma, its symptoms, causes, types and treatments.  The MesoRFA portal provides an avenue through which mesothelioma victims can receive information and advice from mesothelioma specialists such as Parkash Gill, M.D. through the "Ask Dr. Gill" section.  MesoRFA and Dr. Gill are affiliated with the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine's mesothelioma treatment center.

Dr. Gill and the Keck School are at the forefront of research and clinical testing of Veglin (VEGF-AS), a new drug designed to treat malignancy by inhibiting the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) and with it, the formation of new blood vessels.  An anti-angiogenesis drug, Veglin is believed to be capable of stopping the spread of cancer cells by isolating a tumor and preventing the flow of oxygen and essential nutrients required for metastasis.

Mesothelioma Treatment Centers

Approximately 2,000 to 3,000 new cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year in the United States alone.  Instances of the disease were thought to have peaked; however, many specialists believe that the worst is yet to come.  Although mesothelioma remains a somewhat rare disease, increased awareness and understanding of the asbestos cancer has led to the funding of a number of mesothelioma treatment centers located throughout the United States and around the world.  Such facilities are dedicated to the study of specialized treatments for mesothelioma.  Although mesothelioma treatment centers are often associated with experimental treatment modalities, they also provide the more traditional methods used in the treatment of malignant mesothelioma.

The University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine is home to a highly advanced mesothelioma treatment center.  Mesothelioma support is readily available to those in need and clinical trials are ongoing through which patients with advanced mesothelioma can take part in experimental procedures.
